THC in Iowa

Iowa heavily restricts hemp-derived THC products under House File 2605, signed by Governor Kim Reynolds in May 2024 and effective July 1, 2024. Consumable hemp products are limited to 4 milligrams of THC per serving and 10 milligrams per container, with a 21+ age requirement. Only non-inhalable products (edibles, beverages, topicals) are permitted, and synthetic cannabinoids are banned. Importantly, Iowa specifically prohibits Delta-8 THC as an illegal substance under state law, despite federal hemp legality. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services maintains strict registration requirements for manufacturers and retailers, with approved product lists and mandatory warning labels. Products must contain less than 0.3% total THC and cannot be imported from other states unless properly licensed. The regulations effectively eliminated most of Iowa's previous hemp-derived THC market.
